We cook with open fire and intention, using heat, smoke, and bold technique to create food that draws people in.

The Ember

Manda Slater

Co-Founder of Embers and Atlas Catering

I’ve been cooking professionally since 2011, but my journey began at Ribfest, behind a cash register, watching a Red Seal chef command the grill. I said out loud, “Wow, I would love to do that,” and he immediately put me on the pit. That moment changed everything.

I apprenticed under him for years, learning live-fire cooking, high-volume service, and the discipline of feeding crowds.

Off-season, I trained in different restaurants under various chefs, building a broad skill set across cuisines and styles.

When the Ribfest company opened its first brick-and-mortar, I moved with them—and eventually became Head Chef.

After working at a historic downtown tavern in Toronto , where I led the kitchen and developed menus in a fast-paced urban setting, I returned home to work at the Food Bank, producing up to 200 meals a day.

Later, I honed fine dining skills at Five Star Resort, creating feature dishes daily.

Now, my fiancée and I run Embers & Atlas Catering on the Gulf Islands and Vancouver island, blending open-fire cooking, local ingredients, and global inspiration. I draw creativity from travel, culture, and the people I cook for. When I’m not behind the grill, I’m hiking with my fiancée and our dog, Fable.

One thing that stands true to me is:

Food, community, and fire belong together.

That belief fuels every menu, every event, and every plate we create.

Logan Young

Co-Founder of Embers and Atlas Catering

I’m Logan Young, the nomad and co-founder of Embers & Atlas. My journey to catering wasn’t traditional—it was driven by curiosity, adventure, and a desire to create experiences that matter.

I spent over a decade building business skills, from interning in a local shop to launching my own Amazon venture. But I wanted more than sales—I wanted to craft something meaningful. That led me across Canada, working in hospitality, resorts, and even tree planting, moving twenty times in a year. That restless journey earned me the title of “Atlas”—the wanderer, the nomad.

Then I met Manda. One night at a resort in Ontario, she made a simple snack—steak and charred peppers over an open fire—that lit a spark in me. Four months later, we were a couple; two months after that, we were exploring the West and eventually landed on Pender Island, where we found our home, our dog Fable, and got engaged.

From that spark, Embers & Atlas was born. Manda brings the culinary fire, I bring the business drive, and together we turn every event into a sensory experience of flavor, energy, and flame.

I believe in creating moments people will remember, not just meals. That’s the fire behind everything I do.
